Colin Buchanan has been commissioned by East Ayrshire Council to undertake detailed design work for several improvement schemes on the A70.
Grontmij will provide support in detailed design and costing elements of the work. The A70 is single carriageway and has several sub-standard sections due to bends, hilliness and road width.
The first lot relates to improvements at Mote Toll junction through the provision of a deceleration lane and bellmouth widening. A build-out on the minor arm will aim to improve visibility to the east which is currently impaired by an existing building line. The A70 between Kerlestone and Wee Torhill is on a 30mph section to the east of Muirkirk and involves the realignment of a 250m section to improve the road for HGVs in particular.
The second lot relates to a 4km section of the A70 East of Lightshaw to the boundary with South Lanarkshire. The design of width and alignment improvements is intended to provide overtaking opportunities and overall improvements in road safety through the removal of sub-standard bends. The detailed design for both lots includes for drainage requirements, typical sections, standard details and full detailed bill of quantities. Stage 1 and 2 Road Safety Audits will be undertaken by the Edinburgh office of Colin Buchanan. The commission is part of East Ayrshire Council’s ongoing work with Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) for the design of improvements to enhance road safety and economic development in Ayrshire.
