The BioQuarter in Edinburgh is significant in a national and regional context for health and science research in Scotland and in terms of fostering development of the wider economy.
Transport solutions will play a key role in making the BioQuarter a successful place of research, employment and wealth generation for Edinburgh, the wider city region and Scotland. It will be crucial to develop an integrated transport solution that not only deals with local issues, but which embraces impacts on key local and strategic corridors, facilitating sustainable development.
The BioQuarter site is currently occupied by NHS Lothian and The University of Edinburgh, including the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Queens Medical Research Institute and University of Edinburgh’s medical school. Planning permission has already been obtained for further development within the BioQuarter, with Phases 1-3 providing in the region of 135,000m2 for bio medical research and commercialisation.
Colin Buchanan has been commissioned by Scottish Enterprise, in partnership with NHS Lothian and the University of Edinburgh, to prepare a transport assessment, parking strategy and transport action plan in support of further expansion of the BioQuarter, including additional space for bio medical research, the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Division of Clinical Neurosciences.
