We are GIS mapping the whole borough of Lambeth's bus route and bus stop information.
The London Borough of Lambeth commissioned Colin Buchanan to develop an interactive GIS database to show the whole borough’s bus route and bus stop information. The project involved data collection from a variety of sources and the subsequent development of a GIS database using MapX, which incorporates detailed information on all bus routes, bus lanes, bus stop locations and service frequencies.
The final product uses web style browsers with supporting ‘pop-up’ boxes to provide comprehensive route and stop information, including service frequencies and hours of operation. On screen ‘selections’ become highlighted, with direct links then provided to all adjoining bus routes and/or stops to facilitate journey and route planning. Further functionality is added by a search tool allowing routes and stops to be interrogated against a number of criteria, with the software allowing the end user to print specific route and stop information. The underlying database is editable so the programme can be kept up to date.
Future additional features are under consideration to increase potential use of the product such as adding information on bus lanes, accessibility of bus stops (to DDA compliance) and quality of bus stops infrastructure to help show prioritisation and completion of upgrade or maintenance works.
