Fastrack is a bus based rapid transit system in Kent Thameside that is designed to link existing key nodes and planned developments in the area. The system utilises dedicated busways, high quality infrastructure and high specification vehicles, with evidence already showing significant modal shift. Development is being driven by the new station at Ebbsfleet, which is served by Eurostar, and from December 2009 by Southeastern local services.
Fastrack is a long-term project that is expected to evolve to serve new developments as they are built with the network expected to be complete around 2025. It aims to serve developments before the first residents occupy buildings so that they have immediate access to high quality public transport.
Colin Buchanan has supported the Fastrack Project Team since 2005 in developing the system. Key tasks have included providing advice on the content of an operating contract with Arriva and helping ensure a successful launch of the first route in March 2006. We also project managed the delivery of infrastructure for on-road sections of route procured using European funding.
Other key tasks included helping to negotiate a simplified fare structure with the operator, monitoring performance and ensuring that Fastrack could serve Ebbsfleet International from November 2007 with minimal disruption to existing customers.
Fastrack has carried over 50% more passengers than originally forecast with surveys showing that around 1 in 5 passengers have switched from using the car to Fastrack. The system has also won several awards including the Bus Award at the National Transport Awards.
