Street market regeneration, City of Westminster

This interdisciplinary study for the City of Westminster evaluated the performance and potential of five street markets in Westminster.

The study assessed the current health and role of each market in the local community, as well as economic, regeneration, urban design, local policy and transport conditions.

The research included extensive consultation with traders, public officials, community groups, market users and other key stakeholders.

Recommendations were made to maximise the potential of the markets within their contexts and communities, including:

  • A new Market Management Team and management/oversight structure
  • Infrastructure and design improvements at each market
  • Re-branding and re-positioning of some markets
  • Closure of one market
  • Recommendations for enhanced community involvement at different markets
  • Altering opening times
