Colin Buchanan was commissioned by Tate in 2007 to undertake a circulation study of the proposed Tate Modern 2 building.
The study scope comprised a spreadsheet analysis of the current gallery and the proposed extension to identify key capacity constraints, followed by micro-simulation modelling of these areas using LEGION Studio to assist the architects with the design.
Survey footage from free-standing video cameras, supplemented by CCTV footage, was used to determine the movement patterns of the circulation areas and galleries and trip attractors such as shops and restaurants. A spreadsheet model was developed to forecast visitors to new galleries and attractions on the basis of their location and numbers visiting similar attractions in the current gallery. A detailed micro-simulation model was used to assist the design process.
